A little-known thriller is being touted as essential viewing for fans of Quentin Tarantino’s distinctive brand of filmmaking.
The film was largely overlooked upon its cinema release, despite boasting an impressive ensemble cast, in 2025 — though it had actually made its debut at the SXSW film festival back in 2023.
Now, however, audiences can enjoy the title from the comfort of their own sofa, as Americana has quietly been added to Prime Video’s vast streaming library.
Described as a modern-day western, the film is said to be packed with vivid, larger-than-life characters who collide in gloriously entertaining fashion.
According to its synopsis, the story centres on a shy waitress with lofty ambitions who joins forces with a lovesick military veteran.
The unlikely duo set their sights on acquiring a rare Native American artefact after it surfaces on the black market. Their scheme, however, places them firmly in the sights of a ruthless criminal operating on behalf of a Western antiquities dealer, reports the Mirror.
It is not long before violence erupts as further players enter the fray, among them the leader of an indigenous group and a desperate woman running from a shadowy past. Euphoria and The Housemaid star Sydney Sweeney heads up the cast as Penny the waitress.
She is joined by Paul Walter Hauser, familiar to many from his roles in Fantastic Four, The Luckiest Man in America, The Naked Gun remake, and Netflix sketch show I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson. Completing the cast are the late Grey’s Anatomy actor Eric Dane, alongside Dark Winds star Zahn McClarnon and singer Halsey as Mandy.
The film initially struggled at the box office, pulling in less than $500,000. Some attributed this to the controversies surrounding Sydney Sweeney at the time, as she featured in an advertisement for American Eagle jeans around the period of its release.
However, during that same month it faced stiff competition from releases such as surprise horror hit Weapons, as well as action sequel Nobody 2. Comic book adaptation blockbusters Superman and Fantastic Four had also landed the month prior, which may have drawn considerable attention away from the film.
Despite all of this, a considerable number of fans are championing the title as well worth a watch, as demonstrated by its 78% audience score on the website Rotten Tomatoes. Many have argued it is an ideal watch for devoted admirers of acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.
As one viewer posted online: “Excellent! A must see if you enjoy movies in the vein of Quentin Tarantino. It has Pulp Fiction vibes.”
Another agreed: “Amazing. Tarantino meets Wes Anderson. Beautifully shot and directed. Great storytelling. I became incredibly vested in these characters. I want to watch it again.”
Others weren’t immediately drawing comparisons to Tarantino, but were instead put in mind of different directors renowned for acclaimed crime thrillers, the Coen brothers.
One viewer remarked: “Unique and highly entertaining movie. I would say it’s most similar to True Romance, with a Coen Brothers feel and dark humour that you’d find in Fargo and a plot similar to No Country for Old Men. Sydney Sweeney played a much less glamorous role than you might expect but she was so endearing and stole the show.”
Another viewer expressed a comparable opinion: “Wonderfully quirky- pure Cohen brothers – a plot and editing you could follow with a story that surprised at every turn. Strange but ultimately endearing characters.”
