Mum’s easy hack makes Christmas jumper for just £10

Christmas is a lot of fun, from unwrapping gifts, to cherishing moments with loved ones, and naturally, having the perfect excuse to devour heaps of pigs in blankets. Among the newer and most striking yuletide customs is the Christmas jumper. Whether you love them or hate them, the vast array of seasonal knitwear is impossible to ignore, spanning from glittery and delightful designs to genuinely ghastly – or deliberately tongue-in-cheek, depending on your perspective.

While they’re undeniably entertaining, the cost of festive attire can quickly mount up, particularly if you’re kitting out an entire household. However, help is at hand as one social media personality has devised a simple method to create a striking Christmas top for under a tenner.

Laura Deller recently shared footage demonstrating how to make a festive jumper at home for just £8. The mum-of-two routinely shares DIY and property makeover advice online under @houseprojectuk, but stepped away from her typical content to offer this ingenious style hack.

Her video appeared just before Thursday’s Christmas Jumper Day, when people across Britain will head to work, school, or simply venture out sporting vibrant festive knitwear, reports the Mirror.

Speaking in the clip, Laura explained: “I know you don’t follow me for fashion, but I’m a little bit obsessed with this Christmas jumper project. I feel like this is one of those things that you’re either gonna love or hate.”

Laura bought just two items to create the jumper: a plain black sweatshirt from Primark costing £8, and some tinsel from B&M priced at £2. She suggested buying a size up from your usual fit to prevent the sweatshirt from riding up.

“I twisted two lengths of tinsel together and just glued it on with a hot glue gun,” she explained. “Of course you could sew it, but I just went up the sleeves across the chest and all the way down to the other side.”

The footage showed Laura attaching the tinsel in a straight line from each sleeve’s cuff and across the chest. After finishing, she showed how placing your arms together over your head while wearing the jumper brings the tinsel together in a circular shape, creating the appearance of a festive wreath.

Showing herself posing next to one of her children wearing a smaller version of the identical homemade jumper, she noted: “I added some baubles because why not, and I couldn’t resist making one for my mini-me.”

Viewers were astounded by the footage. One commented: “Oh I love this!”

Another remarked: “This is amazing,” before adding: “I can guarantee if I attempted this, it WILL NOT look this good.”

Laura responded: “It’s genuinely just sticking the tinsel on! Your arms do all the hard work!”

Someone else commented: “This is so clever.” And another responded: “Ha ha they look ace xx.”

Christmas Jumper Day takes place annually on December 11. Established in the UK in 2012, the initiative is organised by Save the Children, and has since generated more than £40 million for the charity.
