A man purchased Christmas crackers from Fortnum and Mason to determine whether they justified their eye-watering £150 price point, and what he found inside left him gobsmacked.
Carmie Sellitto, who commands an impressive following of 1.3 million on TikTok, regularly tests various eateries and retailers to assess whether their often-extortionate prices represent genuine value. Often making content reviewing food and merchandise from upmarket establishments such as Harrods , or luxurious hotels and dining venues across the capital, he opted to purchase a set of six Christmas crackers from the renowned department store Fortnum and Mason to investigate whether these festive items warranted their considerable cost.
“I just spend £150 on some Christmas crackers, so let’s open them up and see what’s inside,” Carmie announced at the beginning of his clip before unveiling the large blue box.
Within the box lay six beautifully presented Christmas crackers, wrapped in pristine white paper and fastened with luxurious red ribbon. He proceeded to display one of the crackers to his audience, demonstrating their impressive size before revealing the contents.
Assisted by a woman behind the camera, they pulled apart the initial cracker before Carmie extracted everything to examine what lay within.
“These are sick,” he remarked whilst unfolding the crown tucked inside. Rather than the typical flimsy paper variety, this crown appeared crafted from superior quality material.
Whilst standard Christmas crackers feature the usual paper hat and joke, these Fortnum and Mason offerings boast an additional special surprise within each one.
Moving on, he revealed the first gift – a box containing four champagne truffles. Though taken aback at receiving just four given the crackers’ hefty price tag, he was pleased with their flavour.
That appeared to be the entirety of the first cracker’s contents, prompting him to proceed with the second, which also contained a box of champagne truffles, alongside the crown and joke card. However, upon reaching the third cracker, his enthusiasm peaked as a novel item emerged.
He held up a small red box, which hadn’t been included in the first two crackers. However as he went on to open it, he was disappointed to see that it held two pieces of chocolate that had been shaped like owls.
“I can’t lie, that’s actually a bit of a rip off, two owls,” he remarked, holding up the plastic packaging containing both chocolate pieces. After sampling them, he described the taste as resembling ‘an expensive Easter egg’, which he said he really liked.
The fourth cracker revealed a purple box labelled ‘The Midnight Feast’, adorned with a hedgehog illustration. Inside, he discovered two chocolate pieces sprinkled to resemble hedgehogs. While he found the chocolates adorable and delicious, he was baffled by their hefty price tag, with each cracker setting him back a whopping £25.
The fifth cracker contained a box of assorted Napolitians chocolates, which Carmie hailed as ‘the best chocolate’ he’d ever tasted. The sixth and final cracker unveiled another box of the same delectable assortment.
However, Carmie’s festive joy was dampened by doubt over whether the contents of the Christmas crackers justified the steep £150 he’d shelled out for them.
Fortnum and Mason have been approached for a comment.
